Mariners return Rule 5 pick Mike Ford to Yankees
Earlier today, it was announced
that the Mariners returned Rule 5 draft pick Mike Ford to the Yankees. The
first baseman was the 11th pick in the 2017 Rule 5 Draft and was
one of four Yankees minor leaguers to be taken, along with pitchers Anyelo
Gomez, Nestor Cortes, and Jose Mesa. Ford was optioned to AAA
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
This move comes as a bit of a
surprise, considering Ford put up solid numbers during spring training this
year. His slash line of .259/.385/.500 with two homers, 10 RBIs, 10 walks and
seven doubles in 65 plate appearances is extremely serviceable. He also put up strong numbers in 2017, slashing .270/.404/.471 with 20 homers, 86 RBIs and a whopping 94 walks
between AA Trenton and AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Ford has always shown an
incredible eye and his walk rate reflects that. However, with the emergence of
Dan Vogelbach this spring (six homers, 1.385 OPS), and the return of newly
acquired Ryon Healy from an injury, the Mariners just didn’t have a spot on
their roster for Ford.
It’s possible that we could see
Ford in a Yankee uniform this season, as well. With Greg Bird’s latest injury as well as Tyler Austin’s injury history, Ford may be someone that the team could
consider as a backup option later this season.
