Yankees reassign six players to minor league camp

Following yesterday’s game, the Yankees reassigned six players to minor league camp: RHP Cale Coshow, RHP Raynel Espinal, LHP Trevor Lane, C Chace Numata, LHP Justus Sheffield, and RHP Dillon Tate. This represents the first round of cuts this spring training, and there will be plenty more as soon as the team narrows down where specific players will be in the 2018 season.

Coshow pitched in five games this spring, throwing 4.2 innings while giving up three runs (5.79 ERA) and three hits, walking four batters and striking out four. He also recorded a save. Espinal made three appearances, pitching 3.1 innings, and giving up five hits and just one run (2.70 ERA), while walking one batter and striking out four. Lane, the Yankees’ #30 prospect according to MLB.com, also made three appearances, throwing 2.2 innings and not allowing a run, giving up one hit, walking three, and striking out one.

Numata appeared in two games this spring, racking up five at bats. He had one hit, a single, while striking out once and scoring a run.

Sheffield, the Yankees’ #3 prospect, appeared in three games and threw 5.1 innings. While he did give up seven earned runs, which adds up to an ugly 11.81 ERA, along with six hits and three walks, he did flash his potential, striking out four batters. These numbers are not too much to look into, as spring training is not a time to make judgements.

Tate, the Yankees’ #11 prospect, appeared in two games and threw four innings. He allowed one earned run (2.25 ERA) and four hits, while not walking a batter and striking out three.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
