BREAKING: Bird to have ankle surgery, miss 6-8 weeks

The Yankees won’t have their starting first baseman on Opening Day due to yet another injury.

Earlier, the Yankees announced that Greg Bird will undergo surgery on Tuesday to remove a small broken spur on the outside aspect of his right ankle. This injury is expected to sideline Bird six-to-eight weeks.

This is the same ankle that kept him off the field for the majority of the 2017 campaign. He eventually had surgery in July and didn’t return until the end of the regular season. At only 25 years old, Bird’s brief MLB career has already been ravaged with injuries.

The injury paves the way for another player to step in and potentially make an impact. One such candidate could be Tyler Austin. Austin once again failed to make the roster out of Spring Training, but the Bird injury makes him a strong choice to get called up. The 26-year-old hasn’t shown much consistency at the plate during his stints in the big leagues, but his power makes him an enticing option. Neil Walker could also see some time at first as part of a platoon with Austin.

The hope is that Bird can return to action in June and be the offensive force that fans have been waiting to see. If he can return and stay healthy, it would be yet another piece to arguably the most explosive lineup in the MLB.
