Yankees ink LHP Oliver Perez to minor league deal
With the Yankees southpaw reliever depth
pretty thin outside Chasen Shreve and their closer Aroldis Chapman, the
Yankees have signed 15-year veteran Oliver Perez to a minor league contract as
announced by Team Mexico on Twitter.
Perez was a serviceable starting pitcher
when he came up to the big leagues, but control and stamina issues made him
transition into a relief pitcher in 2012 where he has shined since.
Perez, 36, has pitched in 50 or more
games at the major league level every season since 2013, mostly as a lefty specialist. Perez
most recently pitched for the Nationals in 2017 where he went 0-0 with a 4.64
ERA in 50 games. Most encouraging was his 10.6 K/9 and his ability to get tough
left-handed hitters out.
Expect Perez to start out in Scranton
and be one of the first relievers called up, if a LHP goes down with an injury.
