Yankees offense flounders as Rays secure win 2-1, despite Gray’s complete game effort
In a strange game which saw the
Yankees and Rays play at Citi Field, the Yankees offense clearly missed the bus
to the Mets home field as the Yankees fell 2-1 in game two of this series, despite a great performance from Sonny Gray. Gray was unable to hold off the
Rays as they hit two solo shots, which the Yankees weren’t able to fully respond to.
This was a heartbreaking loss which really should have ended up in a Yankee
victory.

The game was largely uneventful, as both teams sat at one run a piece for a majority of the game after each scoring in the first inning. The Yankees run came in the top of the first from a Matt Holliday double to center field which saw Aaron Judge cross the plate to make it a 1-0 ballgame. Kevin Kiermaier answered in the bottom half of the inning though with a solo shot on the first pitch Gray sent his way.
Despite giving up this solo shot in
the first, Gray was dominant all night, giving up only five hits on the night
and allowing only one walk while racking up nine strikeouts in his eight
innings. Gray sent the Rays down in order four times throughout the game and
would have likely earned a win if the Yankees offense was able to provide just
a bit more for him. However, the Yankees just couldn’t get anything going
against Snell or any of the Rays pitchers. Snell sent the Yankees down in order
in three straight innings through the second, third, and fourth, and was
followed by Steve Cishek who sent down the first three Yankees he saw.
After being sent down in order
again, the Yankees trotted out to the field for the eighth inning with Sonny
Gray still on the hill looking to continue his strong pitching performance.
However, his rhythm was halted by Adeiny Hechavarria who celebrated a solo shot
on the first pitch of his at bat. Gray sent down the next two hitters and left
the game in the hands of the floundering Yankees offense, which produced three
straight groundouts off of Alex Colome to end the game.
Overall, the game was a mix of good
and bad, as this was a very impressive pitching performance from Sonny Gray who
showcased his surplus of skill in a game where he should have earned the win if
the offense hadn’t struggled so much. Hopefully this game is just an outlier
for an offense, which has been stellar as of late. The Yankees will look to
bounce back and take the series tomorrow in the series finale against the Rays.
