Yankees stay scorching hot behind another dominant outing by Severino in 6-1 win over Rays

The main storyline coming into tonight’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays was that the Yankees are three games back with five games to play. With last night’s win, the Bombers solidified homefield advantage for next tuesday’s American League Wild-Card Game, but are still looking to make up ground on the rival Red Sox in the Divisional race. The Yanks can’t control what happens outside of their matchup, yet they looked to keep their winning ways rolling against the now playoff eliminated Rays. Luis Severino dished out another fantastic outing going six innings, striking out nine batters while allowing only one run. That is one stat line that he leads in the majors, marking his 16th time this season allowing either one or less earned runs in a start in the Yankees 6-1 victory.

Thanks to early offensive struggles and rather domination from the starting pitching on both sides, the first four innings went by with no runs scored. Then, in the fifth, recent Yankee killer Adeiny Hechavarria led off the inning with a solo home run to left. A hanging slider out of the hand of Severino led to a 1-0 Tampa Bay lead.

The Yankees would quickly respond in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own. Two Yankees quickly got on, and thanks to a hit and run by Aaron Hicks, there were runners on first and third with nobody out. Brett Gardner would eventually get out, stranding that tying run at third, bringing up Aaron Judge with one out. The count quickly got to 3-2 as it usually does for Judge this season, but he managed to pull an offspeed pitch into the corner scoring two, giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead. With those two RBI’s, Judge now has 111 RBI on the season.
The scoring would continue for the Bronx Bombers. With his second homer in as many days, Starlin Castro hit a solo shot to left in the sixth inning. He would soon be followed up by a solo shot off the bat of Greg Bird, his seventh this month. Later in the inning, Aaron Hicks who is fresh off the DL, wanted to get back into the action with a two-run home run of his own, making the score 6-1.

That score would hold up, thanks to a dominant start by Severino and the lockdown back of the bullpen. Chad Green, Dellin Betances, and Aroldis Chapman all came in and posted strong outings for the Yankees on their way to their 89th win on the season, and season best 20 games over .500.


Luis Severino dominated in his final start of the regular season, looking postseason ready for the Yanks upcoming playoff run. The bats also continued to produce all throughout the lineup, making the Yankees look rather dangerous. Tomorrow’s game marks the series finale and season finale for the Yankees against the division rival Rays. Tomorrow night’s first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 7:05 PM EST on YES, having Sonny Gray(10-11, 3.31 ERA) make his final outing of the regular season. He is up against Ray’s starter in Jacob Faria (5-4, 3.33 ERA).
