Yankees Gleyber Torres takes over as MLB Pipeline's top prospect in baseball
With
the graduation of Mets’ youngster Amed Rosario off prospect lists, Yankees INF
Gleyber Torres has taken over in the top spot on prospect boards. The
20-year-old phenom has seen his stock rise ever since turning pro, and his
stock is at its highest point in the final few weeks of the MLB regular season.
Torres was ranked as MLB Pipeline’s third ranked prospect during the midseason update behind Rosario and Yoan Moncada at the top, but the two have since reached the rookie threshold and graduated off prospect lists. Torres, who the Yankees had been playing at shortstop, second base, and third base was likely to make his Major League debut in 2017 before tearing the UCL of his left arm sliding into home in June.
Prior
to the injury, Torres was hitting .309/.406/.457 (.863 OPS) with two homers, four
doubles, one triple, and 16 RBIs in 23 Triple-A games on the season. He began
the season in Trenton, and finished the year with a slash line of
.287/.383/.480 (.863 OPS) between AA and AAA. His scouting grades on the 20-80 scale are as follows:
Hit: 65
Power: 55
Run: 55
Arm: 60
Field: 55
Overall: 65
MLB
Pipeline will re-rank the prospects at season’s end, but there is a chance
Torres holds onto the top spot. Immediately behind Torres are Victor Robles of
the Nationals, Vladamir Guerrero Jr. of the Blue Jays, Eloy Jimenez of the
White Sox, and Ronald Acuna of the Braves, all of which have a case for taking
over as the game’s top prospect.
Additionally,
the Yankees still have six top 100 prospects, with Miguel Andujar at 96, Justus
Sheffield at 84, Estevan Florial at 82, Chance Adams at 55, Clint Frazier at
23, and of course, Torres at number one.
