Offense and Severino dominate in the Yankees 8-2 victory over the Orioles
After a beatdown in Thursday night's game versus the Baltimore Orioles, the Yankees offense continued to roll as they collected ten hits and blasted two home runs against Baltimore pitching. Didi Gregorius led the way with a home run and four RBIs and Greg Bird made his lineup presence felt as he blasted a long home run as well. The Yankees young ace stifled the Orioles through eight innings with his only blemish being a two-run home run to Wellington Castillo.
The Yankees started the scoring in the first inning off of Orioles starter Gabriel Ynoa as Didi Gregorius hit a laser sacrifice fly to right field, which easily scored Brett Gardner from third base. However, the Orioles erased this lead quickly as Wellington Castillo lined a "Yankee Stadium" home run to right field, which put two runs on the board for the O's.
After the Castillo home run, it was all Yankees. The Yankees tied the game in the bottom of the second after Greg Bird hit a ground ball that Chris Davis nonchalantly let go under his legs. The Yankees then remained quiet until the fifth inning. After an Aaron Judge walk, Buck Showalter opted to go to the young RHP Miguel Castro to pitch to Gary Sanchez and Didi Gregorius. He successfully retired Sanchez, but was no match for Gregorius as Sir Didi blasted a two-run home run to right center field to give the Yankees a two-run lead.
With Luis Severino cruising past the Orioles lineup, the Orioles bullpen was pressured later in the game to keep their deficit at only two runs, and they failed to do so. Gary Sanchez stayed hot in the seventh as he singled to right to score Greg Bird. Didi Gregorius followed up with another sacrifice fly to increase his RBI total to four for the night. Chase Headley hit an RBI single, following a Starling Castro line out, which gave the Yankees a five-run lead. The final damage for the Yankees occurred due to a long Greg Bird home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, which was a very encouraging sign for the injury-prone first baseman.
Luis Severino was finally lifted in the ninth inning after only 95 pitches in order to give David Robertson an inning of work. Robertson worked around a walk to secure the win and give the Yankees a 2.5 game deficit in the division, as at the time of this recap the Red Sox are in extra innings.
The Yankees will look to secure the series win on Saturday as they send rookie Jordan Montgomery to oppose Jeremy Hellickson for a 4:05pm at Yankee Stadium.
