MLB Free Agency: Yankees among the frontrunners for Alex Cobb
Peter
Gammons released a report yesterday that highlighted who he felt the Alex Cobb
sweepstakes would come down to. The two teams that were noted as the
frontrunners were the Chicago Cubs and the New York Yankees. Both teams have a
ton of resources and would not be against adding a pitcher of Cobb’s quality. The Orioles and Rangers have also been tossed around as teams that are in the mix.
The Yankees involvement is puzzling due to the fact that their rotation already consists of Masahiro Tanaka, Sonny Gray, Luis Severino, and Jordan Montgomery. Their fifth starter from last season, CC Sabathia, is currently a free agent, and while most of the Yankee universe would love to see him back, Cashman could see a pitcher like Cobb as a better piece for the rotation or as a potential fallback if the Sabathia negotiations fall through. The Yankees are also said to be s frontrunner for the Japanese phenom Shohei Otani, and Cobb could also be an alternative to him.
Alex Cobb is a solid “fallback” plan as he had a solid bounce back 2017 after missing all of 2015 and most of 2016 due to Tommy John surgery. The former Tampa Bay Ray posted a 12-10 record with a 3.66 ERA and has been said to prefer an east coast home for next season. Cobb has familiarity with the American League East, and the Yankees have seen first-hand how effective he can be at his best.
Stay tuned for updates regarding this development.
