Offense sputters as Yanks fall 2-1 to Rays in 11
As it turns out, one run is not enough to win most baseball games. The Yankees offense faltered today as they fell to Tampa in 11 innings by a score of 2-1.
The Yanks’ sole run came on a Blake Snell wild pitch in the third inning, scoring Brett Gardner after he and DJ LeMahieu strung together two singles. Then, Luke Voit walked, loading the bases with just one out. Obviously, that situation did not yield more runs for New York, although it was not the last scoring chance they would have. Aaron Hicks got thrown out trying to score from second on a Gleyber Torres single in the sixth.

On the pitching side, Masahiro Tanaka took the mound for New York and was very solid, throwing six shutout innings. However, his day was ended prematurely after taking a ground ball to the leg. According to multiple reports, x-rays have come back negative, but Tanaka has been diagnosed with a right shin contusion. The lead was surrendered immediately after Tanaka exited, as Brandon Lowe deposited a Tommy Kahnle pitch into the seats to tie the game to open the seventh inning.

The 1-1 score held thanks to Zack Britton, Aroldis Chapman, and Jonathan Holder, who pitched the eighth, ninth, and tenth innings, but Tampa struck in the eleventh when Austin Meadows yanked a Luis Cessa offering into the right-field seats. Aaron Boone said postgame that since tomorrow’s pitching status is unknown, he was going to let Cessa go as long as he could. That only turned out to be one inning, since after a single by Luke Voit, a strikeout by Hicks, and a Gary Sanchez grounder that turned into a double play, the game was over after 11 innings. Tampa retook first place in the AL East.
What’s Next?
The Yankees and Rays are right back at it tomorrow, as first pitch in the Bronx is scheduled for 1:05 PM EST. Charlie Morton (4-0, 2.32 ERA) will get the ball for Tampa, and as of time of writing, New York has not announced their starter (or opener) yet.
