Gardner Grand Slam Lifts Yankees over Boston

The Yankees and the Red Sox have both had rough starts to the season, yet the Yanks were the team in this series that found themselves getting back to their winning ways over this two game set. The Yanks blew out the Sox on Tuesday night, and on Wednesday night they had to come from behind to win it, which they did, fueled by a late Brett Gardner grand slam as the Yanks completed the two game sweep with a 5-3 victory.

 JA Happ had the ball for the Yankees in this one and early on it looked like yet another horrible start for the lefty. J.D Martinez took Happ deep in the first for a solo shot, and Christian Vazquez sent a two-run shot over the right field wall to give the Red Sox a 3-0 advantage in the second. Happ would settle down however and not allow another run, going six and a third and most importantly keeping his team in the game.

The Yankee lineup had some trouble figuring out former Yankee Nate Eovaldi on Wednesday night, as he threw six innings allowing only one unearned run. One of the few who did figure Eovaldi out was youngster Clint Frazier, who roped an RBI double down the line in the fourth, scoring Voit, to put the Yanks on the board. Eovaldi would continue to deal however, and it seemed as if New York was headed towards yet another bland loss as the Yanks were down two headed in to the bottom of the seventh.

The bottom of the seventh inning started with Boston reliever Brandon Workman on the mound, who would surrender a hit and two walks to load the bases with Brett Gardner coming to the plate. Ryan Brasier was brought in to face Gardy, and after getting ahead on him 0-2, Brasier decided to throw a low 90’s fastball up in the zone; it did not end well for him. Gardy ripped the pitch over the right field wall for a grand slam, and ultimately the game winner, as Ottavino pitched the eighth, Chapman the ninth and the Yanks completed the two-game sweep with a 5-3 win over the Red Sox. The Yankees are now 8-9 and will have a four game home series against the Royals starting tomorrow.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
