Sanchez hits three homers, Yankees offense explodes to complete sweep of Orioles

The Yankees completed a three-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, earning their first series win of 2019. Domingo German pitched six solid innings allowing only two hits. However, it was the Yankees’ offensive outburst with seven home runs, including three from slugger Gary Sanchez, that led to a win on this sunny afternoon, with a final score of 15-3.

The action began in the second inning when Gleyber Torres blasted a high solo shot over 400 feet to center field.  Last night’s hero, Clint Frazier, followed suit with a home run of his own to put the Bombers up 2-0 early. 

That was just the beginning of today’s home run derby.  Sanchez hit his fourth of the season in the top of the third frame, a two-run homer to extend the lead to 4-0. 

German was quick and effective on the mound this afternoon.  He kept the Orioles’ lineup in complete control through five innings.  German surrendered a single to Sucre in the bottom of the sixth for Baltimore’s first hit, but escaped the inning without giving up a run. 

O’s starter David Hess was relieved by Mike Wright in the sixth.  Torres hit a one-out double off of Wright and scored an insurance run on a single from Frazier to make the score 5-0.  The RBI from Frazier marked the Yankees’ first run of this Baltimore series that did not come from a homer.  The fireworks continued in the seventh when Sanchez hit yet another two-run dinger. The Yankees tacked on two additional runs on base hits from DJ LeMahieu, Clint Frazier and Gio Urshela. Remarkably, in his next at-bat, Sanchez went deep for the third time, increasing his RBI count in this game to six.

Things got messy for the Yankees in the seventh, but they were able to come out with a win.  With a 9-0 lead, Stephen Tarpley entered the game in relief of German with two men on and nobody out.  Tarpley struck out two, but a passed ball and wild pitch led to Baltimore tacking a few runs on the board. 

11 runs were simply not enough for the Bronx Bombers…another bomb from Frazier and a two-run shot from Romine increased the Orioles’ embarrassment to 15-3.  Luis Cessa closed out the game with two scoreless innings of relief.

What’s Next?

The Yankees hope to carry the momentum when they travel to Houston for a three-game set against the Astros starting Monday.  Masahiro Tanaka (1-0, 1.46 ERA) will make his third start of the season for the Bombers in game one, facing off against Justin Verlander (1-0, 4.09 ERA).  Catch the game on ESPN and YES at 7:10 EST.
