Yankees to place Tulowitzki on IL, recall Thairo Estrada

The Yankees will be forced to place yet another player on the Injured List, as Troy Tulowitzki suffered a calf strain during Wednesday’s game against the Tigers. The cause of the strain is unknown to this point; Tulo was simply replaced by Tyler Wade during the game and will be undergoing further testing. To take his place on the roster, the Yankees will be calling up infielder Thairo Estrada from AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Estrada, 23, was one of the Yankees more promising infield prospects after the 2017 season, where he hit .301/.353/.392 with six homers, 48 RBIs, and 19 doubles in 122 games for the Trenton Thunder. However, he only managed to play in 18 games in 2018 after sustaining a gunshot injury during a robbery in January of 2018. In those games, he hit .192/.210/.231 with no homers, eight RBIs, three doubles, and 17 strikeouts in 78 at bats. 

However, his numbers this past Spring Training were much more encouraging, as he put up a line of .286/.394/.464 with a double and two triples in 28 at bats. Estrada was scheduled to open the season with Scranton, but will now be joining the Yankees in Baltimore. Some may view this move as a bit strange, since Estrada has not played a full season in over a year, but he was actually the only remaining infielder on the Yankees’ 40-man roster that isn’t either currently with the team or on the Injured List.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
