Bullpen wastes Tanaka's stellar start in 4-3 defeat to Houston

The Yankees looked to ride the offensive wave they started in Baltimore in game one of a three game set against Justin Verlander and the Astros in Houston. The offense was not the problem as the Yanks were able to force Verlander out of the game in the seventh with a 3-1 lead, but Zack Britton and Adam Ottavino coughed up the lead, with Houston eventually coming away with the victor in this one by the count of 4-3.

The Yanks got on the scoreboard first when they loaded the bases in the top of the 3rd inning from a Gio Urshela leadoff walk, a single by Brett Gardner, and a walk from Aaron Judge. They ended up only driving in one run in the inning, thanks to Luke Voit’s RBI single to right, knocking in Urshela.

Jose Altuve got the Astros on the board with a long solo home run to left field, leading off of the bottom of the fourth.

Judge answered right back with a solo shot of his own to right field off of Verlander for his third of the season to take back the lead for the Yanks in the top of the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, on Verlander’s 100th pitch of the game, D.J. LeMahieu ripped a double in the left center gap. Clint Frazier followed with an RBI single off of the left field wall, narrowly missing a 2-run home run, extending the Yanks’ lead to 3-1.

Tanaka worked himself into a jam by walking the first two batters in the bottom of the sixth, but no damage was done as he got two ground balls and a fly out to end the inning, which would cap off his outstanding performance on the mound.

Zack Britton took over for Tanaka in the seventh, and ran into trouble. After allowing two baserunners, Britton gave up a two out, two-run double to Tyler White which tied the score at 3. Adam Ottavino relieved Britton and put out the fire by striking out George Springer, leaving the potential go-ahead run at second base.

After walking Bregman and allowing a single to Michael Brantley, Correa hit a broken bat infield single towards first, bringing in Bregman to give Houston a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Roberto Osuna secured the win in the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning to earn the save.

 What's Next?:
The Yankees will look to get back on track tomorrow night as they hand the ball to Jonathan Loiasiga in game two of this three game set in Houston.  The Astros will turn to Gerrit Cole.  First pitch is schedule for 7:05pm EST.
