Urshela drives Yankees past Angels in 14 innngs
After
a strong week at home where they went 5-1, the Yankees headed west to open a four-game
set against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim. Coming off his best start of the
season, the Yankees sent JA Happ to the hill to face old foe Matt Harvey.
With the Yankees still struggling mightily with injuries, runs were hard to
come by in this one but in the end, it was Gio Urshela that delivered an RBI single in the top of the 14th and sent the Yankees to a 4 – 3 victory.
The Yankees got out to a quick lead in this one, with Luke Voit launching a solo home run over the right center field wall in the top of the first inning. It didn’t hold up for long however, as Jonathan Lucroy came back with a two run homer in the bottom of the second inning to put the Angels on top 2 – 1.

The
Yankees came right back to tie the game in the top of the third, when a base
hit by Kyle Higashioka and walks to Brett Gardner and Voit loaded the bases for
Gleyber Torres. Torres then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home
Higashioka before the Yankees stranded the go-ahead runners on base.

In that 12th inning, Clint Frazier doubled to open the frame. He moved to third on a ground out and was brought home by Urshela for a 3-2 lead. Aroldis Chapman couldn't hold the lead though and the game dragged on tied at three. In the 14th the Angels provided for the Yankees and Urshela didn't miss it. Gleyber Torres struck out to open the frame but reached first after the ball got away from Lucroy. With two outs the Angels intentionally walked Mike Ford to get to Urshela. The Yankees will need to grind out wins like this until they get healthy and they will have to rely on unlikely heroes. Tonight it was Gio Urshela who helped them get their fourth win in a row.
