CC notches 250th career win as Yanks complete sweep of Rays
The
Yankees 12-1 victory completed the series sweep of the Rays behind an
offensive explosion and excellent start from CC Sabathia, who added
another milestone to his historic career with his 250th career win.
Sabathia is now the 14th pitcher in Major League history to reach 250
wins and 3,000 strikeouts, well on his way to Cooperstown.
Sabathia
pitched one of his best starts of the season, scattering three hits
over six innings, striking out seven while allowing only one run.
The
Yanks got out to an early lead against Blake Snell in the bottom of the
first inning, thanks to a three-run home run from Gary Sanchez, his
21st of the season. This extended the team streak to 22 straight games
with a home run.
Left-hander Colin Poche came in to relieve Blake Snell after 1/3 inning, attempting to get out of the bases loaded jam. A Gio Urshela
hit-by-pitch scored Aaron Hicks, making it 4-0. Two batters later, DJ
LeMahieu once again delivered with runners in scoring position, hitting
his second base hit of the inning, driving in two runs and giving the
Bombers a 6-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
The
reigning AL Cy Young winner was unable to find the strike zone in the
bottom of the first inning, walking four batters and allowing six earned
runs while throwing 39 pitches.
The
Rays got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning. After back
to back walks to Ji-Man Choi and Daniel Robertson, Tommy Pham doubled
driving in one run. Sabathia retired Austin Meadows to escape any
further damage.
CC
was relieved in the 7th inning by Jonathan Holder. Holder allowed the
first two batters to reach base, but then retired the next three to get
out of the inning without allowing a run.
LeMahieu and Voit had back to back walks in the bottom of the 7th, which was followed by Gary
Sanchez who lined a double down the left field line, driving in LeMahieu to extend the Yankee lead to 7-1.
Edwin Encarnacion followed Sanchez with an RBI single to center field, bringing in Voit. After an Aaron Hicks walk, Gleyber Torres launched his first career grand slam to right center field, making it a 12-1 Yankees lead.
Tampa Bay brought in their third baseman, Daniel Robertson, to pitch the 8th inning, and he recorded a scoreless inning.
Luis Cessa pitched the final two innings of the blowout win, retiring all six batters he faced.
What’s Next
Tomorrow the Yankees begin their four game series against the Houston Astros at Yankee Stadium. Framber Valdez will pitch for Houston and Chad Green will start for the Yanks as they use the opener.
