Yankees MLB Draft 2019: Yankees select SS Anthony Volpe out of Delbarton School with the 30th pick in the first round

With the 30th pick in the 2019 MLB draft, the New York Yankees selected 18-year-old right-handed hitting shortstop Anthony Volpe. Volpe is ranked 63rd overall by MLB.com and sported a .388 BA with 10 XBH, 34 RBI, and 17 SB in 84 at-bats this season. Currently, Volpe is committed to play at Vanderbilt University.

Volpe is an interesting pick because he is undersized at the shortstop position, sitting at 5’ 11”, 180 lbs. He is prided on his defensive abilities on the field, as he is ranked the second-best defensive prospect in the draft. He is said to have a high baseball IQ and runs great routes to the ball. Volpe is excellent at throwing on the run along with swiping across the bag on double play balls. He has a quick swing at the plate and has good plate coverage with a little bit of pop.

He started all nine games for the 2018 18U national team where he hit .459 with 14 RBI and 17 hits. Some scouts believe that his short swing will contribute to excellent contact hitting ability at the next level, as others think that will be taken advantage of. Overall, Volpe looks to be a solid all-around middle infielder with above average speed as he goes from home-to-first in 4.15 seconds. He is compared to former Texas Rangers infielder Michael Young.

Volpe is a question mark to sign or to go to Vanderbilt, but I think the fact that he was picked higher than he was ranked and was already following the Yankees Instagram page before the draft helps out, as he has been a lifelong Yankees fan. Nonetheless, the team is happy to welcome him to the Yankees’ farm system, hoping for a great start to a successful career.
