Yankees MLB Draft 2019: Yankees select RHP Nick Paciorek from Northwestern with the 225th pick

In the seventh round of the 2019 MLB Draft, the New York Yankees selected Nick Paciorek, a right handed pitcher from Northwestern.

Paciorek was the first player taken from Northwestern since 2015, and was the highest pick since Luke Farrell went in the sixth round to the Royals in 2013. He is also the nephew of Tom Paciorek, who had an eighteen-year career in the MLB with six different teams. 

When the Sherman Oaks, California native first got to Northwestern he was a catcher, but after playing 37 games his freshman year behind the dish for them he was moved to the bullpen. His career average and slugging percentage is .151 and .233 respectively. 

In 2019, his first full season as a pitcher, he pitched to a team leading 3.37 ERA, and had 44 strikeouts in 26.2 innings of work. Paciorek features a fastball that can reach 94 mph, and a slider that at times looks unhittable. It seems likely that Paciorek will remain a reliever in the Yankees system as scouts have noted that “he can only hold his stuff for an inning or two”.

Paciorek was ranked by Baseball America as the 229th top prospect entering the draft, making him a very solid pick for the Yankees in the seventh round. Since he is still very new to pitching it might take him slightly longer to move up the ranks in the Yankees farm system.
