Giancarlo Stanton expected to miss all of July with strained PCL

Yankees’ slugger Giancarlo Stanton, who was placed on the 10-day Injured List with a strained PCL yesterday, will be sidelined until at least August, per Brian Cashman in an interview with the media today.  Mike Tauchman was recalled from triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take his spot on the roster ahead of the team's weekend series in London against the Boston Red Sox.

Stanton has played in only nine games in a frustrating 2019 campaign that saw him first land on the IL at the beginning of April with a biceps strain that then became a shoulder injury.  Stanton’s rehab was further halted when he suffered a strained calf after being hit by a pitch in the back of his knee, and when he was ultimately able to return to play, he lasted only six games before finding himself back on the shelf.  He just appeared to be finding his groove, after a four-RBI night in a thrilling back-and-forth win over Houston on Saturday, and then blasting his first home run of the season on Monday night against Toronto.  The injury occured on an ugly face-first slide into third base Tuesday night.  After attempting to play through the injury for an inning, Stanton was later replaced by Brett Gardner.

The big question among fans is why Clint Frazier wasn’t recalled to replace Stanton on the roster, rather than Tauchman, however, the Yankees value Tauchman’s defensive prowess and ability to play all three outfield spots.  As the fourth outfielder on the team, he isn’t expected to get many meaningful at-bats anyway.

The Yankees have already been able to survive a lengthy IL stint from Stanton once this season, and this second trip should be no different.  With the team already boasting sluggers like Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Gleyber Torres, Luke Voit & Edwin Encarnacion, they are by no means shot on pop, and as such, are not desperate for the bat Frazier can provide.
