Yankees MLB Draft 2019: Yankees select SS Josh Smith from LSU with the 67th pick

With the 67th pick, in the second round of the 2019 MLB draft, the New York Yankees have selected Josh Smith, a shortstop from LSU. This is the Yankees third and final pick of the first night of the draft. It is also the second shortstop the Yankees have selected. Smith was ranked as the 76th best prospect on MLB.com and hit .346 with nine homers in 2019. Smith, who is a left-handed batter, uses the whole field and makes good contact.

Smith is a 5’10”, 178 pound 21 year old who has some raw power and drives the ball consistently. He has solid speed and is considered to be a savvy baserunner. Some scouts project he will move to second base, but others believe his high baseball instincts will allow him to stay at short. Scouts also rave about Smith’s fundamentals as well as his work ethic.

Smith is considered a high floor prospect because he does not have any obvious weaknesses, even if he does not have any great tools. Worst scenario, he should be able to provide the Yankees’ farm system with a solid utility infielder. Many believe he will move quickly through the system and could be major league ready quicker than most guys in this draft.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
