Yankees MLB Draft 2019: Yankees select RHP Mitch Spence from the University of South Carolina Aiken with the 315th pick

With their last day two pick of the MLB draft, the Yankees selected Mitch Spence from the University of South Carolina Aiken.

Spence, 21, is a fourth-year junior, and right-handed pitcher. He is the seventh pitcher, and fourth right-hander the Yankees have selected up to this point. Spence was an all-conference player in the Peach Belt, one of the top division II conferences in the country.

In 2019, he has pitched to a 3.95 ERA, and has struck out 104 batters in 93.1 innings. His best year though was last year when he had a 3.03 ERA, and struck out 117 in 92 innings. The difference in the last couple year may be his control, as his number of walks given up grew by a considerable margin.

Spence does not appear in Baseball America’s top 500 prospect rankings, or MLB pipeline’s top 200 list. Early comments by some suggest that this may have been a reach for the Yanks, but in the tenth-round expectations aren’t very high anyway, albeit a division II player.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
