Aroldis Chapman brings home AL Reliever of the Month after lights out May

Yankees’ closer Aroldis Chapman has been awarded the American League Reliever of the Month award for May. During the month, Chapman was a perfect 11 for 11 in save opportunities and currently has 17 for the season overall. He is also sporting a 1.52 ERA for the season in 23.2 IP. This the fourth time in his career that Chapman has brought home a Reliever of the Month award and his second time as a Yankee. Chapman and Mariano Rivera are the only two Yankee pitchers to bring home a Reliever of the Month Award.

While Chapman has not displayed his typical high-end velocity so far this year, he has still been lights out at the end of the game. He has shown an increased focus on command and has relied upon his slider more as well. The velocity has ticked up a little as the season has worn on and I expect it will go up as the temperature continues to rise. Still, the fact that he has shown to be a more complete pitcher so far this year is a promising development for his effectiveness long term.
