Yankees MLB Draft 2019: Yankees select LHP Jake Agnos from East Carolina University with the 135th Pick
In the fourth round of the 2019
MLB Draft, the Yankees used their second pick opportunity of the second draft day to select
LHP Jake Agnos from East Carolina University.
Agnos is 5’11” and weighs 207 pounds, and hails from the town of
Haymarket, Virginia.
Agnos, 21, committed to ECU in 2014. He is currently in his Junior year, having played for D-1 ECU since 2017. Over his first two seasons of play, he worked as a reliever, but entered the 2019 season with a clear goal of working as a starter. After putting in consistent hard work at the beginning of the season, this goal was eventually met, and later, earned him the spot as not just a starter but as ECU's No. 1 starter.
Hard work didn't just earn Agnos the No. 1 spot in the starting rotation. He won 2019 AAC Pitcher of the Year Honors. But the list of awards doesn't end there for Agnos; he is a four-time AAC Pitcher of the Week winner.
As a reliever, Agnos went 3-3 in his rookie season in 2017, with a solid 3.22 ERA. He recorded 64 strikeouts and 64.1 IP. He allowed 31 runs on 58 hits, and walked 32. In 2018, his season was a bit weaker. He went 4-4 over 63.2 IP with a 4.10 ERA. He did, however, record 86 strikeouts and one save. But, in 2019, Agnos went 11-2 with combined time as a starter and a reliever, starting 16 games. He touted a stellar 2.02 ERA and logged a remarkable 140 strikeouts over 98.0 IP. He also allowed only 25 runs on 69 hits, and just nine of those hits were home runs.
While Agnos' work on the mound has always proved solid, his noticeable turnaround in 2019 can go down, so far, as the greatest moment of his career. That type of drive, whether in the bullpen or as a starter, will continue to be an asset -- only this time to the Yankees' pitching staff. Good pitching beats good hitting, and, provided he keeps improving, the Yankees scored in the pitching department with Agnos.
