Yankees MLB Draft 2019: Yankees select left-handed pitcher TJ Sikkema from the University of Missouri with the 38th pick
With the 38th pick of
the 2019 MLB draft, the New York Yankees have selected TJ Sikkema. This is the
pick New York acquired as part of the Sonny Gray trade. Sikkema was ranked #57 overall
by MLB.com and went 7-4 in 17 appearances in 2019. He threw 88.2 innings,
struck out 101 batters, and had a 1.32 ERA. In his 17 appearances, 13 were starts
and four were out of the bullpen, so he has already shown the ability to be
versatile.

Sikkema is 20 years old, six feet
tall and weighs 200 pounds. His fastball is usually between 89 and 91 mph with
run and sink from a three-quarter arm angle. He also has the ability to get his
fastball up to 93-95 mph on occasion. He has a plus slider that sits at 78-83
mph and a sinking changeup he is comfortable throwing in any count.
Sikkema earned Third Team All-America
honors in 2019 and is a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award, which is
given to the best amateur baseball player in the United States. Sikkema has deceptive
stuff that makes it hard on hitters to pick up his pitchers. He should be a
welcomed addition to the Yankees farm system that features mostly right-handed
pitchers.
