With the Yanks having already made a major splash in a relatively otherwise quiet offseason across the league, they're looking to make another move. The Yankees head into the 2018 offseason with only three locks in the starting rotation, Luis Severino, Sonny Gray, and Jordan Montgomery. Masahiro Tanaka has a player option to opt out of his remaining three years worth $67 million. The Yankees will also be losing CC Sabathia and Jaime Garcia to free agency unless they resign them. The Yankees have repeatedly mentioned that they want to be under the luxury tax threshold for the 2018 season, likely meaning that they would like to avoid large long-term contracts. The Yankees have reportedly “checked in” on Lance Lynn, Yu Darvish, and Jaime Garcia, while they also continue to closely monitor Sonny Gray. Darvish, Lynn, and Garcia would all be rentals, as Gray is locked up a few more years. With the need of a starting pitcher, the Yanks are looking into just about every guy available on the market.
