Yankees to call-up Mason Williams after Aaron Hicks Achilles injury

Along with Gary Sanchez, Aaron Hicks was hurt in the Yankees’ extra innings loss on Thursday night against the A’s. Believed to have happened in his at-bat in the eighth inning in which he grounded out, Hicks stayed in the game before voicing his discomfort to Joe Girardi. It was later diagnosed as an Achilles injury by the Yankees medical staff, but it isn't believed to be too serious.

With many injuries to the Yankees this season, this certainly isn't good news, as Hicks is batting .306 with ten homers and 36 RBIs. He has also brought stellar defense and seven stolen bases off the bench, now earning himself a starting role in center field. Despite split starts for most of the season, Hicks certainly deserves to be in the discussion for the third starting outfielder in the AL, along with teammate Aaron Judge and Angels star Mike Trout.

In response to the injury, Mason Williams has been called up and is on his way to Oakland. With Hicks certainly unavailable tonight, the roster move we are waiting for is to see if Hicks will go to the DL or not. With it expected to only be a few days, it's possible that Williams just replaces Rob Refsnyder’s spot and serves as the Yankees fourth outfielder until Hicks is back healthy.

Refsnyder has been unimpressive in the chances he’s gotten, as he is hitting .167 in 24 ABs this season, without an RBI. Mason Williams on the other hand, has been solid enough in Triple-A to earn the call-up. His .243 average certainly could be better, but he has contributed 18 RBIs and 12 SBs. The fourth round pick back in 2010, a top prospect forever it seems like, Williams is 14-for-48 (.292) in his limited major league career.

An Achilles injury is certainly something to be worried about, but it sounds like at the most, Hicks will be out for a week. Along with Sanchez, he was labeled as day-to-day and shouldn't be out long. The Yankees certainly need him back as soon as possible, as they have suffered far too many injuries this season.

Five keys to a successful 2016

Being trapped inside for the last two days due to the snowstorm that pounded the entire eastern seaboard has only enhanced my desire for the return of baseball season. Considering all indications from ownership point to the Yankees being done for the most part as far as additions are concerned, I felt as if now would be a prompt time to make some early predictions about the 2016 season. As I look at the Yankees team as currently comprised, I'm feeling the same sense of uncertainty as I did at this point last season. A successful 2016 season is contingent on production from players who are either old, injury prone, or in some cases, a combination of both. Normally, this would seem to be a recipe for disaster, however I'm going to try the optimistic route. Below, are what I view as the five keys to a successful 2016.
