Chad Green officially named the starter for tomorrow’s series finale vs. Baltimore, German will still likely pitch after Tommy Layne is DFA'd

After all of the Yankee universe was convinced that Domingo German was going to be called up to start tomorrow’s game vs. the O’s, the Yankees officially announced that right-hander Chad Green will get the ball Sunday, and he will try to lead the Yankees to a series sweep.

Green has been used in a swingman role for most of this season and has been very solid out of the bullpen. He has pitched to a 1.62 ERA with 20 Ks in 16.2 innings. He had mixed results as a starter for the Bombers last season, but his stuff has been electric, thus far, making him more than deserving of an opportunity to start. Green told the media that he was told in the ninth inning of Saturday’s game that he was going to start the following game.

Despite the fact that Green is starting, German is still being called up for Sunday’s game. MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch reported that Tommy Layne was seen packing up his locker, after tonight’s game, so odds were he was on the move. Green has not been stretched out this season, so him and German possibly splitting game is one very possible scenario. Layne has not pitched well at all this season and was an obvious choice to be DFA’d. His 7.50 ERA and inability to pitch to lefties effectively will not be missed.
