Yankees make five roster moves prior to Thursday’s game

The Yankees have been forced to make a ton of moves lately due to fluke injuries, and that continued to be the case on Thursday afternoon. All in all, they made a total of five roster moves:

-Called up OF Dustin Fowler from AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre
-Optioned 3B Miguel Andujar to Scranton
-Placed 1B Tyler Austin on the 10-day DL with a hamstring strain
-Added 1B Chris Carter to the 40-man roster, and the active 25-man roster
-Designated OF Mason Williams for assignment

Fowler, the Yankees’ #8 prospect, was enjoying a breakout year with the RailRiders where he hit .293/.329/.542, with 13 homers, 19 doubles, eight triples, and 13 steals. His 40 extra base hits led the Yankees farm system, and he also set a career high in home runs already (he had 12 all of last year).

Andujar, meanwhile, is the Yankees’ #9 prospect, and made his major league debut last night, going 3-4, with four RBIs, a double, a stolen base, and a walk. He’s the first Yankee EVER to have four RBIs in his MLB debut, so that’s cool. Yankees fans are for sure disappointed to see him sent down, but he will be back soon.

Tyler Austin’s injury adds to the Yankees’ extensive black hole at first base so far this season. He played just four games, going 2-13 with a homer, two RBIs, a walk, and six strikeouts. Get well soon, Tyler.

Carter is back on the active roster after being designated for assignment just five days ago, and this move is solely out of need. The Yankees’ starting first baseman for Wednesday and Thursday is Austin Romine, the backup catcher. That says enough about their first base situation. In 57 games (167 at bats), Carter hit .204/.286/.383, with eight homers, 23 RBIs, and a whopping 70 strikeouts.

Mason Williams, formerly a top prospect, hit .250/.294/.250 in five games with the Yankees this year. He’s always had some tools, most notably his speed, but could never find a clear path to the Bronx. He could be a useful fourth outfielder for other teams, however.
