Judge homers again but bullpen loses fourth game in a row in 7-6 loss in Oakland

The Yankees were back at it on Friday night after a deflating extra inning loss the night before, with Luis Severino on the hill looking to put his team back on track. The Yankees spotted themselves an early four run deficit, but eventually came back to take a 6-4 lead. However, for the fourth game in a row, the bullpen would give up late runs resulting in a loss as the Yankees dropped the second game of this series by a score of 7-6.

Both teams were set down in order in the first, but the A’s offense exploded in the second, as they sent all nine men to the plate and scored four runs on four hits. Severino threw 39 pitches in the inning, and could not finish hitters while ahead in the count early on. Severino would settle in after his difficult second, not allowing a hit from that point on,keeping his team in the game.

The Yanks broke through in the third, as their MVP front runner Aaron Judge hit yet another home run, a three run shot, his 23rd of the season. Judge took a low and outside pitch to the opposite field, traveling only 379 feet: a chip shot for Judge.

In the fifth, the Yankee offense would continue to produce, as recent call up Mason Williams drove home Ronald Torreyes with an RBI base hit, tying the game at four. Castro would get a golden opportunity later in the inning, with the bases loaded after back to back walks by Sean Manaea. Castro would fall behind in the count and fly out to right, keeping the score at 4-4.That score would not stand for long, as Chris Carter lead off the sixth by hitting a bomb to straight away center, his second straight game with a home run, to give the Yankees their first lead of the game.

It was clear that Severino did not have his best stuff tonight, yet did a great job of working through his struggles and giving the Yankees six solid innings of work on a night that they desperately needed innings from their starter. Severino finished off his start strong striking out four of his final five batters he faced, to bring the game to the seventh with a 5-4 New York lead.

In the seventh, Judge continued his incredible season with a triple to the wall, and eventually scored on a clutch two out, two strike single by Starlin to put the Yankees up 6-4 headed to the bottom half of the seventh, putting the game into the hands of the Yankee bullpen. Chasen Shreve pitched the seventh, giving up a run on a sacrifice fly, but ultimately leaving a runner on second to keep the Yankees ahead 6-5 headed to the eighth.

Jonathan Holder got the ball in the eighth, and proceeded to give up the lead, as he surrendered a two run single on an 0-2 count to rookie Matt Chapman, who was called up yesterday. It was Chapman’s first big league hit, and it put the A’s ahead 7-6 going to the ninth.

Judge would get on base with a walk in the ninth, but the other three hitters that came to the plate all struck out, and the Yankees fell for a fourth straight night, this time by a score of 7-6. The Yankees have a 4:05 ET start the next two days, and will hope to get much better production out of their bullpen, which has been detrimental on this west coast road trip
