Yankees to call up Domingo German for spot start on Sunday

The Yankees will reportedly call up RHP Domingo German to start Sunday in the final game of the current series against the Orioles. Masahiro Tanaka was originally scheduled to start, but due to his recent struggles, he was pushed back a day in order to gain an extra day of rest, and to face a much weaker Angels lineup (especially with Mike Trout on the DL with a thumb injury). German, 24, is 2-1 with a 3.76 ERA in 26.1 innings for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season, along with 27 strikeouts.

The Yankees acquired German in December of 2014, along with Nathan Eovaldi and Garrett Jones, when they sent Martin Prado and David Phelps to the Marlins. He missed all of 2015 with Tommy John surgery, but came back in 2016 with the Yankees’ low and high A minor league teams, where he pitched a combined 49.2 innings with a 3.08 ERA. He was promoted to Trenton at the beginning of this season, and was quickly elevated to Scranton soon after. 

The Yankees will most likely send German back down to Scranton after the start on Sunday. German's current status on the 40-man roster makes him the most attractive option to make this start, since the Yankees can simply use his option when demoting him to the minors. Luis Cessa pitched six innings on Friday, while Chad Green would have only been able to give the Yankees about 60 pitches or so due to his extended time in the bullpen. Many Yankees fans probably are disappointed not to see Chance Adams get the call, but the young phenom is not on the 40-man roster so another move would have been required, further complicating matters for the Bombers.

Five keys to a successful 2016

Being trapped inside for the last two days due to the snowstorm that pounded the entire eastern seaboard has only enhanced my desire for the return of baseball season. Considering all indications from ownership point to the Yankees being done for the most part as far as additions are concerned, I felt as if now would be a prompt time to make some early predictions about the 2016 season. As I look at the Yankees team as currently comprised, I'm feeling the same sense of uncertainty as I did at this point last season. A successful 2016 season is contingent on production from players who are either old, injury prone, or in some cases, a combination of both. Normally, this would seem to be a recipe for disaster, however I'm going to try the optimistic route. Below, are what I view as the five keys to a successful 2016.
