Injured Dustin Fowler and LHP Caleb Smith selected to the Triple-A All Star Game

Before Dustin Fowler’s tragic injury Thursday night that ended in a rupture in his right patellar tendon, he was named to the Triple-A All Star Game, along with lefty Caleb Smith.

Smith has emerged onto the scene in 2017, really making a name for himself. He was drafted in the 14th round back in 2013 out of Sam Houston State and is now nearing age 26. It's now or never for the Scranton pitcher and he's taken advantage of the opportunity. After one appearance with the Double-A Yankees affiliate, Smith was promoted to Triple-A where he has dominated to Chance Adams-like numbers. A virtual unknown by many Yankee fans, Smith is 7-0 in 15 games, 14 of which were starts, with a shutdown 2.20 ERA. He's allowed just 61 hits in 82 innings, allowing hitters to hit just .205 against him. He also has added 80 strikeouts along the way, while accumulating 1.02 WHIP and hopefully a promotion to the big league roster one of these days.

The other All Star Game participant is outfielder Dustin Fowler, who will obviously be unable to play in the game. Fowler has impressed scouts plenty the past few seasons, working his way up to being the eighth-ranked Yankees prospect. The outfielder hit 13 homers in 70 games, more than he's ever hit in a season in his career at any level, along with 19 doubles and 8 triples. His slash line stood at .293/.329/.542 along with 13 SBs before his promotion, really showing improvements in his power. Last year he also put together a truly incredible season at Double-A Trenton as he did nearly everything. He hit for 30 doubles, 15 triples, 12 homers, all of which were career highs up until that point. He continued showing speed with 25 SBs and slashed .281/.311.458. Fowler’s injury is certainly a huge bump in the road for his future, but if he can bounce back, Fowler has the potential to become a five-tool star in the majors.

These two certainly deserved the honor of being named to the Triple-A All Star Game. Being in perhaps the most loaded farm system in baseball, Smith and Fowler have consistently produced all season long.

Five keys to a successful 2016

Being trapped inside for the last two days due to the snowstorm that pounded the entire eastern seaboard has only enhanced my desire for the return of baseball season. Considering all indications from ownership point to the Yankees being done for the most part as far as additions are concerned, I felt as if now would be a prompt time to make some early predictions about the 2016 season. As I look at the Yankees team as currently comprised, I'm feeling the same sense of uncertainty as I did at this point last season. A successful 2016 season is contingent on production from players who are either old, injury prone, or in some cases, a combination of both. Normally, this would seem to be a recipe for disaster, however I'm going to try the optimistic route. Below, are what I view as the five keys to a successful 2016.
