Gary Sanchez suffers abductor muscle injury, not expected to undergo further tests

In a seemingly endless back-and-forth game, Yankees star catcher Gary Sanchez had to be pinch ran for in the top of the ninth by utilityman Ronald Torreyes. Sanchez hurt his abductor muscle when stealing second in that inning, but it's reportedly not expected to be anything serious. Yankee fans will know more about the extent of it as Friday goes on. Manager Joe Girardi believes Sanchez’s injury will only be a few days, meaning he's unlikely to go on the DL at this point, unless Gary wakes up more sore than last night. He's also unlikely to undergo further tests, certainly good news after the ninth inning scare on Thursday night.

Sanchez has dealt with his fair share of injuries this season and has been sizzling hot lately, making a case to start in the All Star Game, despite missing extended time. The A’s were unable to get Sanchez out last night, as he had two singles, a double, two walks, and two RBIs. Sanchez is 15 for his last 32, including five homers, three doubles, and 18 RBIs. His average has jumped from .248 to .297 in the process. He also 11 homers and 33 RBIs in 145 ABs now on the season and his overall slash line stands at .297/.382/.559, back to the 2016 Gary Sanchez we became accustomed to.

If it is more serious than we thought, backup Austin Romine would obviously take over. Romine filled in pretty well for Sanchez at the beginning of the season, but has his average back down in the .220s. The Yankees would also have to find a backup to Romine if Sanchez were to miss time, which is unknown at this point considering Kyle Higashioka was awful in his earlier stint this season. Higashioka was hitless in 18 ABs, while then suffering an injury in Triple-A. Sanchez’s injury comes at a bad time, as with already having Greg Bird, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Aroldis Chapman hurt, CC Sabathia, Adam Warren, Aaron Hicks, and now Sanchez have all been injured this week. Yankee Nation shouldn’t be worried though, as this injury shouldn't be anything more than a few days.
