Yankees MLB Draft 2017: Yankees select RHP Glenn Otto from Rice University with the 152nd pick of the fifth round

Glenn Otto is the fourth right hander that the Yankees have taken in the first five rounds. Another Texas big boy like fourth round pick Canaan Smith, Glenn Otto stands 6’4” and weighs 225 pounds. A closer at the the very prestigious Rice University, he is currently tied with former Yankee David Aardsma on Rice’s all time saves list.

At Rice, Glenn Otto had some pretty impressive numbers. With his best pitch in his arsenal being a 92-95 mph fastball that tops out at 97, strikeouts were pretty common. In 171.1 innings pitched in his three-year career, Otto had 222 K’s, a 2.61 ERA, and most impressively, a .198 batting average against.

Otto’s arsenal consists of a heavy sinking fastball, a great knuckle curve with 12-6 action, a powerful slider, and a change-up. However, Otto doesn’t throw his change-up nearly as much as most professionals, and that will be something the Yankees will look to develop as he heads into pro ball.

Because of his wide frame and loose arm action, scouts believe he could potentially become a starter at the professional level. To do that, he will need to develop that change-up and throw more strikes.

Scouts also project Glenn Otto’s already powerful fastball to jump in velocity at the pro level. If the Yankees view him as a bullpen guy in this day and age, he will have to come out at least in the mid-90’s consistently.

Scouts say that Glenn Otto has one of the best curveballs in the draft. A 12-6 knuckle curve that “will make you drool” according to Jacob Markle of minorleagueball.com. He can locate his curveball very well, which is a great sign for a young arm.

The Yankees got a solid pick in Otto, who had great success at Rice. If he can throw more strikes and develop his slider and change-up in a timely manner, expect to see him up with the big club in the next few years.

Being trapped inside for the last two days due to the snowstorm that pounded the entire eastern seaboard has only enhanced my desire for the return of baseball season. Considering all indications from ownership point to the Yankees being done for the most part as far as additions are concerned, I felt as if now would be a prompt time to make some early predictions about the 2016 season. As I look at the Yankees team as currently comprised, I'm feeling the same sense of uncertainty as I did at this point last season. A successful 2016 season is contingent on production from players who are either old, injury prone, or in some cases, a combination of both.
