The Rivalry is back on in the Bronx, as the Red Sox come to town to take on the Yankees in a four-game set. The Bombers shut down the San Diego Padres Wednesday en route to their eighth consecutive series win, and they’ll look to ride that momentum into a very important series this weekend. While the Rays enter the day just a game out of first place in the AL East, they have a three-game set with the MLB-best Minnesota Twins on tap - it’s crucial the Yanks put away the Sox and begin to pull away from a surging Tampa team. The defending champions have not had it easy to start the year. They enter play just a game over .500, already 7.5 games back in the division race. Last month the Yankees swept a quick two-game set against the Sox - if the bats can take advantage of an unstable pitching staff (16th ranked 4.43 team ERA), they shouldn’t have an issue putting away their bitter rivals yet again. The Yankees came into Wednesday’s rubber match against the Padres looking for a win with James Paxton making his return from the Injured List. The New York Yankees currently own a 35-19 record and a one game lead in the battle for first place in the American League East on May 29. They have been able to achieve this success all with Aaron Judge, Didi Gregorius, Giancarlo Stanton, Luis Severino, and  Dellin Betances combining to play in only 23 games.   Photo Credit: NY Post

Remember when it seemed like someone was sustaining some sort of injury every night, and we could slowly and painfully feel our souls leaving our bodies as a result? Well, those days are over. With the activation of James Paxton this morning, the Yankees are slowly getting healthier. The Yankees entered Tuesday night’s game looking to clinch another series win behind Masahiro Tanaka but could not overcome a bad start despite a late push.   Tanaka and the Yankees got off to a horrible start, as Manny Machado singled home Greg Garcia to make the game 1-0 before Eric Hosmer hit a three-run home run to extend the lead to 4-0 before Tanaka got his first out. The Yankees are still one of the most injured ball clubs in the league yet they continue to put tallies in the win column. The Bronx Bombers are one of the hottest teams in baseball having won ten of their last twelve games. They return home after a short road trip that saw them complete a four-game sweep of the Orioles as well as a 2-1 series win in Kansas City. The Pinstripes will start a seven-game home stand with a three-game set against the San Diego Padres. The Padres won the Manny Machado sweepstakes this offseason but many figured the 2019 season was going to be a rough one as San Diego sports one of the youngest rosters in the majors. They have vastly outperformed expectations as they sit at 28-25 through 53 games, good for second in the NL West. The Padres come into this series having won five of their last six as they look to keep pace with the LA Dodgers. After being rained out on Friday evening, the Yankees and Royals took to the field on Saturday afternoon for the first game of a day-night doubleheader to begin their three-game series.  The Yankees came in hot, riding a five-game winning streak, and sent JA Happ to the mound.  He was opposed by righty Jakob  Junis  of the Royals.  A seventh inning monster two-run home run off the bat of Luke Voit proved to be the difference in this one as the Yankees would go on to win by a score of 7-3.   Photo Credit: Charlie Riedel/AP Photo The Yankees’ offense started off hot in this one, plating two runs off  Junis  in the first inning.  Aaron Hicks drew a walk to start things off, before Voit singled to left to put first and second on with no outs.  Although both Gary Sanchez and  Gleyber  Torres would strike out on sliders low and away well off the plate, the inning still proved fruitful when Clint Frazier ripped a two-run double down the right field line that scored both Hicks &

Heading into a three-game Memorial Day Weekend series against the Kansas City Royals, the Yankees are in first place in the A.L. East.  They are two and a half games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays.   They have won six of their last seven games.  They swept the Baltimore Orioles in a four-game set, winning the last of the four games on a run driven in by an Aaron Hicks walk.  Players, the next of which will be James Paxton, are returning from the Injured List.   Not to put too fine a point on their situation, but, they are currently a pleasure to watch.

The Yankees currently sit at 32-17 and are on top of the AL East. Despite this, the team has some areas it could improve in; however, Brian Cashman will not have to dig into his pocketbook or pick up the phone to get all the help this team needs. The team is expecting reinforcements off of the IL on both sides of the ball over the course of the next two months, which should give this already successful team an even bigger boost. However, this does not mean the Yankees will be silent on the trade market as more injuries could amount, setbacks can happen, and other teams will acquire big pieces resulting in the Yankees not wanting to fall behind. The Yankees are coming off two consecutive successful regular seasons followed by postseason failures, and still have the minor league talent to swing some game-changing deals. The Yankees have officially placed CC Sabathia on the Injured List with inflammation in his right knee.   This is the same knee that Sabathia had surgery on in 2014 and saw IL (then, the DL) time with in 2015, 2017 and 2018.   The Yankees will recall Nestor Cortes to take Sabathia’s spot on the roster. The Yankees made it four wins in a row, and eight in their last nine contests, with a 7-5 victory over the Orioles in Baltimore. The Yanks have scored 41 runs in their last four games and are very clearly playing their best offensive baseball of the season right now. What looked to be a lost game, following a disastrous start by JA Happ, turned into one of the Yankees’ most dramatic comeback wins of the young season. The Baltimore Orioles have, so far this season, proven an easy opponent -- as well they should be.  Of course, going into the season as the 2019 Yankees' first opponent of the year, the talk across the world of sports news was that the Orioles were in possession of one of the worst teams in MLB.  With a record of 15-31, and after dropping their most recent game 10-0 to the Cleveland Indians, they're certainly proving it.  While it's been an awfully convenient set of circumstances that has led the Yankees to easy teams in the midst of their unprecedented injury woes, the Orioles are beyond just an easy team.  They're terrible -- and even the "replacement" Yankees (who are proving to be quite the surprise force) have no excuse for losing.  In looking at the pitching matchups, there's only further evidence to the point that the Yankees should breeze through this series.  They've managed to make it to first place in the A.L. A huge seven-run sixth inning helped lead the Yankees past the Rays, in a game where Aaron Boone decided to emulate the opponent by using Chad Green as an opener.  In the inning, the Yanks scored more than the opposing Rays did through nine innings thanks to great plate discipline from the bombers, who earned nine walks on the day.  Green lasted less than two innings, giving up two solo homeruns. He then gave the ball to Nestor Cortez Jr., who lasted four innings and gave up three runs for the Yankees, the last runs they would surrender all day.  Up until the bottom of the sixth inning, the game was looking to be a back and forth battle with both teams knotted up at five through five innings, with homeruns by: Brett Gardner, Aaron Hicks, Kevin Kiermaier, and Willy Adames.    Photo by Sarah Stier/Getty Images

As it turns out, one run is not enough to win most baseball games. The Yankees offense faltered today as they fell to Tampa in 11 innings by a score of 2-1.    The Yanks’ sole run came on a Blake Snell wild pitch in the third inning, scoring Brett Gardner after he and DJ LeMahieu strung together two singles. Then, Luke Voit walked, loading the bases with just one out. Obviously, that situation did not yield more runs for New York, although it was not the last scoring chance they would have. At this time last season, Tommy Kahnle had a 6.14 ERA and was rehabbing a nagging shoulder injury he suffered just six games into his 2018 campaign. He would appear in two more games for the Yankees in late May before being sent down to triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for most of the summer. All in all, Kahnle’s disastrous season ended with him posting a 6.56 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in 24 games for New York. It was a far cry from the 2.70 ERA he put up in 32 games for the Yankees in 2017 after coming over in a trade from the White Sox. It would have been easy for the team to give up on the 29-year-old and make him the forgotten man of their stacked bullpen, but they gave him one more chance and now they’re reaping the rewards.
