On a day where the Yankees made a huge trade deadline splash, two young, dynamic pitchers faced off in the Bronx. After days and days of endless tweets, reports, and rumors swirling around the Yankees and Athletics, approximately an hour before the July 31 Trade Deadline Jack Curry of YES announced that the Yankees had indeed acquired their number one trade target, Sonny Gray, from Oakland. Jeff Passan followed up with the package, which consisted of IF/OF Jorge Mateo, SP James Kaprielian, and OF Dustin Fowler. Amid all the trade rumors swirling around the Yankees, internal options are on the horizon of returning to the Major League team. One of them is 1B/OF Tyler Austin who is set to start his rehab assignment on Tuesday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre per Joel Sherman. The Yankees have had a successful homestand thus far, winning five of six, and eight of their last ten overall, as they will look to win a fourth straight series versus the struggling Detroit Tigers, who find themselves at 47-56, fourth place in the AL Central. This series marks the first time all season that these two teams have matched up, and it will be the first of two meetings between these teams during the month of August.

Hoping to finish off a four game sweep against the third place Rays, the Yankees sent Jordan Montgomery to the mound to oppose Jacob Faria. Montgomery struggled from the get go, as he was unable to finish the third inning. The Yankees offense was equally as frustrating, repeatedly blowing scoring opportunities. The Bombers went 1-11 with runners in scoring position, leaving a whopping 10 runners on base. The Yankees medical staff believes Greg Bird will return in late August as they push to make the playoffs, according to Buster Olney of ESPN . As the trade deadline approaches, the Yankees are still looking to upgrade their rotation after adding Twins lefty Jaime Garcia early this morning. Many of us woke up to news that the Yankees had acquired left-handed starter Jaime Garcia from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for Minor League pitchers Zack Littell and Dietrich Enns. Garcia is certainly an improvement over the likes of Caleb Smith and Luis Cessa, but I'd argue only incrementally. In order to go on a run deep into the playoffs, the Yankees must acquire a top line starter. Sonny Gray, who happens to be under team control until 2020, remains the answer. Garcia is a middle of the rotation starter, and he'll most likely help, but it's still not enough. Brian Cashman's job is not complete just yet. There is still one important move left to make. The rejuvenated Yankees have found themselves back in first place after five straight wins and a cold spell by the Red Sox, and planned on staying in first and expanding their lead as they faced off vs Tampa in a Saturday afternoon game at the Stadium. Lefty youngster Caleb Smith got the start for the Yanks but was pulled early, as this game wound up in the hands of the Yankees bullpen. This back and forth game ended with another Brett Gardner walk off, as a single up the middle with the bases loaded in the ninth gave the Yanks their sixth straight win by a score of 5-4. The Yankees have reportedly “checked in” on Lance Lynn, Yu Darvish, and Jaime Garcia, while they also continue to closely monitor Sonny Gray. In the world of baseball, circumstances within an organization have the tendency to change over the course of the season. Going into the 2017 regular season, the Yankees had their bullpen roles lined up pretty easily. The 86-million-dollar man, Aroldis Chapman, would close games in the ninth, the Dellin Betances would be his set up man, and the veteran, Tyler Clippard, would get seventh inning duties. After a dramatic win last night against the Rays, the Yankees continue to roll and surge for first place in the American League East. Friday night in the Bronx, Masahiro Tanaka (7-9, 5.37 ERA) took the hill looking for some consistency in what has been an up and down season for the former ace. Tanaka was very sharp all night long, striking out five out of the first six batters he faced. It was reported yesterday by Bob Klapish of USA Today that the Yankees and Athletics were making some serious progress with the Yankees leading the pack in the Sonny Gray trade discussions, though the two clubs were not close to a deal. When the Yankees acquired a young shortstop from the Arizona Diamondbacks with an eccentric name following the 2014 season, I didn't expect much out of the player who also happened to be knighted in the Netherlands. Didi Gregorius has emerged as an integral part of the Yankees roster. Dating back to his first season with the Yankees in 2015, Gregorius has gotten progressively better throughout the course of his tenure in the Bronx. This season, however, Gregorius has taken yet another impressive step forward. He has emerged as one of the best shortstops in the league. The New York Yankees take the first game in their four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays with a walk-off home run in the 11th inning. The back-and-forth game saw the Yankees tie the game in the ninth inning with two outs on a defensive lapse by the Rays. New York had more than a few opportunities to win the game in the first nine innings but needed more to win the contest 6-5. Ellsbury got the start in center field, after falling out of favor, and rewarded manager Joe Girardi with an early lead. Todd Frazier followed up with an RBI single, bringing in Ellsbury. The team continued the momentum one inning later when Gary Sanchez hit his 15th home run of the season. At this point it seemed as if Chris Archer wouldn't last long. For the past week or so, one of the main focuses of the Yankees has been their newest star outfielder, Clint Frazier. As of Thursday morning, the 22 year-old is batting .290/.306/.565 with three homers, 13 RBIs, six doubles, and two triples in 18 games. He’s been an extra base hit machine, but has also managed to come up clutch many times. However, Yankees GM Brian Cashman announced last week that, when Aaron Hicks is activated off the DL in the future, Frazier will be sent back down to Triple-A. Naturally, this caused an outburst. Frazier’s emergency has relegated Jacoby Ellsbury to bench duty, but Ellsbury will remain with the Yankees once Hicks comes back, solely because of his contract. What kind of message is this sending to both the players and the fans? If the Yankees are going to continue with their youth movement, Frazier needs to stay with the team, and Ellsbury needs to be wearing a different uniform come August 1 st .   Photo via Al Bello of Getty Images

The New York Yankees may have found their mojo after a two-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds this week and winning three out of four against the Seattle Mariners over the weekend. Now they look to continue that momentum and put distance between themselves and the Tampa Bay Rays who are just a game and a half behind them in the standings. The four-game series at Yankee Stadium could be the difference between first and third place. GAME ONE: (Thursday, July 27 | First Pitch: 7:05 PM ET) CC Sabathia (9-3, 3.44 ERA) vs. Chris Archer (7-6, 3.77 ERA) Both teams will come out guns blazing with the big guy CC Sabathia squaring up against Chris Archer. Sabathia has pitched well in his last two starts, allowing only one run and throwing at least five innings. He has started twice against the Rays, pitching a shutout early in the season and two runs in five innings back in May. According to Anthony Fenech on twitter , the Yankees have entered as potential suitors for a Justin Wilson trade. Wilson pitched for the Yankees in 2015 before being traded to the Detroit Tigers for Luis Cessa and Chad Green in the offseason. Back in 2015, he was one of Joe Girardi’s most trusted relievers, He posted a 3.10 ERA in 74 games and 61 innings pitched. After a much-needed night off after a long road trip, the Yankees were back in action Tuesday night in the Bronx. For the Bombers, Jordan Montgomery (6-5, 4.09 ERA) got the nod as they continue to fight their way back atop the A.L. East as they were only two games back entering tonight’s ballgame. The Cincinnati Reds came into Yankee Stadium for tonight’s interleague battle with Luis Castillo (1-3, 3.86 ERA) taking the mound. The Reds had struggled lately with the majors highest ERA, and have been subpar against lefties all season long. According to a report by Mark Feinsand posted on MLB.com, the Yankees are one of a few teams that are ramping up efforts to land a top starting pitcher. While the Yankees have been linked to a lot of the pitchers on the market, their focusseems to be mostly on Oakland pitcher Sonny Gray.  Feinsand reported today that the Yankees and the A’s are making progress on a deal that could include first baseman Yonder Alonso as well as Gray. Following a much-needed series win against the Seattle Mariners, the Yankees only trail the Red Sox by two and a half games in the American League East. Although the Mariners are not an overly formidable team, the series win over them was comforting, as it showed the Yankees are capable of beating the teams they should. The case in this two game series is similar, as the Reds are the current holders of the third worst record in the National League and overall sit 16 games below .500. The series also takes place in the Bronx, where the Yankees have played great ball. The Yankees have played two games against the Reds this season and split the games, while putting up ten runs in the first game. Prior to this series, the Reds dropped two of three games to the Marlins and a game to the Indians.
