Yankees MLB Draft 2017: Yankees draft RHP Austin Gardner 272nd overall

Looking to bolster their future bullpen, the Yankees have once again selected a right-handed pitcher. With the 272nd pick of the ninth round New York has selected right hander Austin Gardner out of The University of Texas-Arlington.

 Standing at 6’2" and weighing in at 215 pounds, Gardner is built to be a reliever.  Splitting time between the rotation and bullpen at UT-Arlington, the righty posted a 2.42 ERA over 44.2 innings during his 2017 campaign.

Gardner really hit his stride as a reliever this past season, allowing only seven of 22 inherited runners to score. His ERA out of the bullpen was an impressive 2.11, making him the Mavericks go-to reliever.

Gardner pitched for the Wichita State Shockers as a freshman in 2014 where he saw only a combined one inning of action in two appearances, allowing two earned runs.  He played his sophomore season at a junior college, before transferring to UT-Arlington for his junior season of 2016.

After a sub-par junior season in which he posted a 9.12 ERA in 25.2 innings, Gardner finally found his groove during his senior season. He will look to keep it going as a member of the New York Yankees.

Five keys to a successful 2016

Being trapped inside for the last two days due to the snowstorm that pounded the entire eastern seaboard has only enhanced my desire for the return of baseball season. Considering all indications from ownership point to the Yankees being done for the most part as far as additions are concerned, I felt as if now would be a prompt time to make some early predictions about the 2016 season. As I look at the Yankees team as currently comprised, I'm feeling the same sense of uncertainty as I did at this point last season. A successful 2016 season is contingent on production from players who are either old, injury prone, or in some cases, a combination of both. Normally, this would seem to be a recipe for disaster, however I'm going to try the optimistic route. Below, are what I view as the five keys to a successful 2016.
