Yankees’ Dustin Fowler leaves Major League debut with ruptured right patella tendon

Dustin Fowler had his Major League debut cut very short after a heartbreaking injury in the bottom of the first inning. On a ball hit in foul territory, the 22-year-old outfielder crashed into the wall, rupturing his patella tendon in his right knee, which required immediate surgery during the game in Chicago.

It was a gut-wrenching moment for everyone watching Thursday’s late starting game. After viciously crashing into the wall, Fowler attempted to walk it off and walk back into right field, but his inability to put any weight on his right leg forced him to collapse to the dirt as Joe Girardi and Steve Donohue immediately ran out to him.
Girardi was seen immediately throwing his hands over his face in despair as Fowler simply looked around, clearly in shock that his debut would end essentially before it began. To make matters worse, Fowler was due to leadoff the top of the second inning.

Fowler was the Yankees’ eighth ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline, and he was performing incredibly well in Triple-A, hitting to a .293/.329/.542 line in 70 games with 13 home runs, 43 RBIs, 19 doubles, eight triples, and 13 stolen bases.

 His injury adds to the long list of current Yankee players on the DL. Currently, the Yankees are without Greg Bird, Tyler Austin, Starlin Castro, Aaron Hicks, Matt Holliday, Adam Warren and CC Sabathia.

The diagnosis for Fowler all but guarantees that he will not play again in 2017. The club has obviously not yet announced the corresponding roster move and for now, everyone’s focus is on wishing this talented young kid a full and speedy recovery.

Five keys to a successful 2016

Being trapped inside for the last two days due to the snowstorm that pounded the entire eastern seaboard has only enhanced my desire for the return of baseball season. Considering all indications from ownership point to the Yankees being done for the most part as far as additions are concerned, I felt as if now would be a prompt time to make some early predictions about the 2016 season. As I look at the Yankees team as currently comprised, I'm feeling the same sense of uncertainty as I did at this point last season. A successful 2016 season is contingent on production from players who are either old, injury prone, or in some cases, a combination of both. Normally, this would seem to be a recipe for disaster, however I'm going to try the optimistic route. Below, are what I view as the five keys to a successful 2016.
