Yankees send Clint Frazier to DL with oblique strain, reinstate Aaron Hicks

Shortly after last night’s lineups came out and Clint Frazier was demoted to the eight spot in the batting order, it was announced that he would sit the game out with an oblique strain. His replacement Garrett Cooper went on to have a great night in that eight hole, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Now, the Yanks have placed Frazier on the ten-day DL for that oblique strain and have activated Aaron Hicks.

This comes at a good time, as the Yanks have been needing some more offense as of late, especially with Frazier’s struggles. Hicks was one of the better hitters for the Yanks in the first half of the season and could have earned his way onto the All Star team had he not gotten injured. He was batting .290 in 200 ABs with ten homers, 37 RBIs, seven SBs, and stellar defense in center field. This is also timely in the fact that the Yanks head into perhaps the biggest series of the season to this point against the division-leading Red Sox this season. The Yanks also expect Greg Bird and Starlin Castro back not too long from now, as they will both begin rehab assignments next week. A lineup with a healthy Castro, Hicks, and Bird would make this offense one of the deepest ones in baseball.

Once Frazier is activated from the DL, he is more than likely headed back down to Triple-A for a few weeks until rosters expand at the beginning of September. This is a disappointing turn of events for Frazier who started his big league career impressing fans with his clutchness and aggressive base running. Frazier’s just seven for his last 42 (.167), really slowing down after his initial hot streak.

Despite the disappointment of Frazier getting injured, the Yanks get back a guy who was one of the top outfielders in the AL in the first half of the season. Hicks’ presence to this lineup hasn’t gotten enough credit and with his skillset of hitting for average, solid power, and great defense, his addition will be crucial to helping the Yanks make it back to the playoffs.
