Bombers fight back from early deficit, but bullpen collapse gives the game away
Coming off a four game sweep of that team from Queens, the Yankees traveled to Boston looking to gain some ground in the division race. The forecast was ominous, calling for a deluge by game time, but the skies would hold enough for the game to be played. The Bombers would get hot late, but a six run bullpen explosion in the seventh and eighth innings would put the Red Sox division lead to five.
With the rain falling down, Montgomery got two quick outs in the second inning, then Xander Bogaerts would hit a hard double off the very top of the Green Monster. Young lefty slugger Rafael Devers would add another notch in his short Yankee killing history with a home run over the monster, giving the Red Sox a 2-0 lead. The Red Sox would add another run with a long home run onto the street by Christian Vazquez in the bottom of the fifth, and the Yankees were in a 3-0 hole. Drew Pomeranz would leave in the fourth inning with back spasms.
After threatening in the third and fourth innings, the Bombers had nothing to show for it as they entered the top of the sixth. Chase Headley singled to right field to bring up Todd Frazier, who hit a deep fly ball into the bleachers on the monster to cut into the Boston lead. Austin Romine and Brett Gardner would single, and Aaron Hicks would load the bases after taking a pitch on the foot bringing up Aaron Judge. Judge would foul off four balls over 100 mph to force a 3-2 count before grounding out to short. The Yanks would hand the ball over in the bottom of the sixth trailing 3-2.
Green would make quick work in the bottom of the sixth, continuing his great season. Gary Sanchez would continue his hot streak with a first-pitch home run over the Monster for his 23rd on the season, and the game was tied. The Yankees weren’t done though, a Didi Gregorious walk, Headley single, and a Frazier walk brought up Ronald Torreyes. The beloved utility player would hit a two-run single off the wall giving the club a 5-3 lead. After a Gardner walk, Hicks would get hit again on his foot, scoring a run. With Judge up to bat the Red Sox would go to the bullpen for the sixth time. Judge would strikeout on a full count, and Sanchez would line to first for the last out of the inning.
Chad Green would return after the long stretch with a 6-3 lead. A pop fly, single, and a walk to start the inning, would give the Red Sox the tying run at the plate. Manager Joe Girardi would bring out flamethrower Tommy Kahnle to finish out the inning. A soft ground ball by Eduardo Nunez would load the bases on an infield single, and the momentum seemed to shift back to the home club with Mookie Betts as the go ahead run.
The right fielder would cut into the Yankee lead with a sac fly to center. The red-hot Andrew Benintendi would come to the plate with two outs, the lefty would pull a RBI single to right field, and the New York lead was down to one. He would walk Hanley Ramirez bringing up Mitch Moreland with the bases loaded. The lefty would hit a two run RBI up the gap off a 0-2 count, and the Yankee lead left as quickly as it appeared. After a flyout, the inning would end with a 7-6 Red Sox lead
Closer Aroldis Chapman would start the eighth inning to try and keep the lead at one. After a single, a walk, and a double steal, it would start to seem as Chapman's recent struggles was rearing its ugly head again. Jackie Bradley's Jr. two-run double would extend the lead to three. Chapman looked dejected and lost, and its starting to look like the $86 million man has lost his touch.
Romine and the top of the order would take on Craig Kimbrel hoping for a miracle. Romine, Gardner, and Hicks would strike out, ending the Yankee chances of a second comeback.The Yanks left 14 batters on base in the game, a recent trend.
Jordan Montgomery had an up and down game, seeming to almost alternate innings of great pitching and home runs. He would leave after 5.0 innings pitched, with three earned runs, two walks, three strikeouts and two home runs. The rookie lefty has started to slip ever so slightly since his stellar beginning of the season, and this could be the last time we see him for a while, as CC Sabathia and Masahiro Tanaka should end their DL stints soon.
CC Sabathia returns to the mound off his short DL stint as the Bombers will look to bounce back against AL Cy Young leader Chris Sale. The team needs a big win as they now sit five games behind the Red Sox for the division lead, and are running out of matchups with their rival.
