Marco Estrada reportedly claimed by AL East team, “implied heavily” that it was Yankees

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reported earlier today that Blue Jays’ RHP Marco Estrada was claimed off of revocable waivers by an unnamed American League East team. While the team was never officially named, a source told the Blue Jay’s BP Toronto that odds are the Yankees were the team that in fact claimed Estrada.

It would make sense that the Yankees claimed a starting pitcher with their current injury situation, but the same source that identified the Yankees as the likely culprit of the claim, also believes that the claim was more of a block move to prevent another team from claiming Estrada. Houston and other AL rivals are reportedly looking to add pitching, so it makes sense why the Yankees would not want another team to claim a player that has had success against them in the past. There seems to be no exchange of possible packages between the Blue Jays and this “mystery AL East team,” so likely nothing will come out of the claim.

Estrada, 34, is not putting up as solid numbers as he is accustomed to, but has turned it around as of late, as he has a 3.23 ERA in his last five starts. After a disastrous start to their 2017 season, the Blue Jays find themselves only 3.5 games out of the second Wild Card spot, so they may have just been trying to gauge interest and see what their options were on the market.

Five keys to a successful 2016

Being trapped inside for the last two days due to the snowstorm that pounded the entire eastern seaboard has only enhanced my desire for the return of baseball season. Considering all indications from ownership point to the Yankees being done for the most part as far as additions are concerned, I felt as if now would be a prompt time to make some early predictions about the 2016 season. As I look at the Yankees team as currently comprised, I'm feeling the same sense of uncertainty as I did at this point last season. A successful 2016 season is contingent on production from players who are either old, injury prone, or in some cases, a combination of both. Normally, this would seem to be a recipe for disaster, however I'm going to try the optimistic route. Below, are what I view as the five keys to a successful 2016.
