Yankees injury news: Greg Bird to begin rehab assignment tomorrow, expects to return to the Bronx next week

The Yankees first baseman Greg Bird will start his rehab assignment in Triple-A Scranton tomorrow night (Aug. 16), and expects to get back to the Bronx next week. He will play five innings tomorrow and will increase his play by then in hopes of returning by the end of this month. Bird has played 19 games this season and has been out since May 1 with a broken bone in his foot.

The young slugger was supposed to be the answer at first base this year, as he dueled with Bryce Harper for the most home runs during a stellar spring training, but after a foot injury during the last game of spring training, Bird has not been the same.

The first baseman would go 6-for-60 with only one home run in his short stint in 2017. The lefty hits for power, as shown in his 11 home run 2015, but a shoulder injury shelved him for all of 2016. An unnamed member of the Yankees' front office criticized Bird, stating if the injured first baseman wanted to be with the team, he would be there. The young slugger responded that he does want to play and that he is focused on getting better.

The Yanks desperately need some spark to their offensive lineup, and if Bird can return to his half his 2015 form, it could help replace the lost production of the slumping Aaron Judge that carried the club through the first half of the year. With Chase Headley at first and Todd Frazier at third, the team would need to find a place for Bird if he does return to form, but if he does produce, the team will most likely do anything possible to keep him in the lineup.
