Flurry of roster moves find Sabathia on DL, Monty called up, and Austin off DL

Today the Yankees announced that starting pitcher CC Sabathia has been placed on the 10-day DL with knee inflammation. The club recalled starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery from Triple A Scranton. In an unrelated move, INF Tyler Austin was recalled from the 10-day DL and optioned to Triple A Scranton.

 Sabathia was pulled from his rocky start against Toronto in the third inning when manager Joe Girardi said he noticed that the lefty grabbed his knee brace after awkwardly coming off the mound, and decided to pull him from the game. Sabathia gave up four runs in that start, all four coming from two run home runs by Blue Jays' slugger Josh Donaldson. This knee is the same one that shelved CC during the 2015 season, but MRIs showed no additional damage to the knee, which is good news for the veteran pitcher.

Montgomery was the odd man out of the six starting pitchers after the Sonny Gray and Jaime Garcia trades. The rookie lefty was having a solid year for the Yankees but had a couple of rocky starts, now sporting a 4.05 ERA with 111 Ks and a 7-6 record this year. Montgomery was most likely going to be recalled when the September 1st call ups came around, but he wasn't even able to make a start in Scranton before being called up. He will pitch this Sunday against Chris Sale and the Boston Red Sox.

Austin has been out of the lineup since June 27 with a right hamstring strain. In his rehab stint in Triple A, he was batting .217 with one HR and three RBIs. Hopefully, the young first baseman can have enough success to rejoin the club as a September 1st call up.

 Injuries have taken their toll on the Yankees with multiple starters missing significant time already this season but still are in the hunt for a division title behind the Boston Red Sox. The Bombers face their archrival ten times in the next 24 days and hope they can get on a run to close the gap.

Five keys to a successful 2016

Being trapped inside for the last two days due to the snowstorm that pounded the entire eastern seaboard has only enhanced my desire for the return of baseball season. Considering all indications from ownership point to the Yankees being done for the most part as far as additions are concerned, I felt as if now would be a prompt time to make some early predictions about the 2016 season. As I look at the Yankees team as currently comprised, I'm feeling the same sense of uncertainty as I did at this point last season. A successful 2016 season is contingent on production from players who are either old, injury prone, or in some cases, a combination of both. Normally, this would seem to be a recipe for disaster, however I'm going to try the optimistic route. Below, are what I view as the five keys to a successful 2016.
