Gary Sanchez and the Yankees offense stomp Detroit 13-4 in series opener

After a disappointing series loss in Boston, the Yankees came to Detroit hoping to get back on their feet and reassure themselves and their fans that they are still a playoff team. The team did this and more on Tuesday as they erupted for 13 runs and 16 hits. Sanchez led the charge with two home runs and four RBIs. Masahiro Tanaka came off of the disabled list and tossed a solid outing and best of all Aaron Judge’s strikeout streak finally came to an end.

The Yankees historically have a tough time roughing up starters that have pitched poorly versus the rest of the league, but this was not the case on Tuesday night. Opposing starting pitcher Matthew Boyd came into the start with an ERA north of 5.00 and saw it raise to 6.24, after a horrendous outing. The scoring started quickly as Gary Sanchez blasted a two-run 493-foot home run deep into the night to give the Yankees an early 2-0 lead. Tyler Austin added on in the first with a sacrifice fly.
Tyler Austin would drive in another run in the third with an RBI single to make it 4-0. He wouldn’t remain on base for long as Todd Frazier laced a two-run triple down the right field line scoring Didi Gregorius and Austin. Ronald Torreyes would add on with a sac-fly to make it a seven-run lead for the Bombers.

The scoring continued in the fifth as an RBI fielder’s choice by Aaron Hicks and RBI single by Aaron Judge made it 9-1, as Ian Kinsler had an RBI double in the bottom of the third.

Masahiro Tanaka looked excellent in his first outing back from shoulder inflammation as he took advantage of his early lead and tossed seven innings of three-run ball without allowing a walk. Chasen Shreve would go on to pitch the remainder of the game and his lone blemish of the night was an allowed inside the park home run to Nick Castellanos that could have been prevented by Jacoby Ellsbury if he had not made a poor attempt at catching the hit.

Aaron Hicks would tack on two more runs with a home run of his own in the seventh, and Gary Sanchez would blast his second two-run home run of the night in the ninth. Aaron Judge also officially ended his streak of consecutive games with a strikeout at 37 games, after he was lifted for Jacoby Ellsbury.

The Yankees are back in action tomorrow night versus Detroit as it will be Luis Severino opposing the struggling Jordan Zimmerman. Zimmerman did pitch well in his last outing against the Bombers, so hopefully the offense can carry over into tomorrow’s night’s game.
