Gary Sanchez’s five RBIs and Luis Severino’s solid start lead the Yankees to a 7-5 win and four game sweep of the Mets

After securing a series win in yesterday’s contest, the Yankees successfully swept the Mets in the four game Subway Series with a 7-5 victory. Luis Severino pitched extremely well up, until the seventh inning, and his offense had his back. Gary Sanchez led the team with five RBIs, followed by Gardner with two of his own. Bryan Mitchell struggled mightily in the ninth as he allowed a grand slam to Curtis Granderson, but Dellin Betances came in and shut the door.

The Yankees got off to a hot start in the first inning against the Mets and Steven Matz. A two-base error and put runners on first and second with nobody out. Aaron Judge was not able to plate them, after a quick strikeout, but Gary Sanchez came through with a three-run blast to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead. The Yankees didn’t score for the rest of the inning, but with their ace on the hill, a three-run lead was a tough deficit for a less than solid Mets’ offense. Tyler Austin also singled in his first at-bat back in a Bronx uniform.

In the fourth inning, the Yankees were back in business as three consecutive singles by Tyler Austin, Ronald Torreyes, and none other than Luis Severino (first MLB hit)  set up a bases loaded, no outs scenario for Brett Gardner. Gardner executed as he slashed an opposite field double that plated two runs, making the score 5-0. After an Aaron Hicks groundout, Aaron Judge was hit on his arm guard by a Steven Matz 0-2 delivery, which reloaded the bases for El Kraken. Mets’ manager, Terry Collins, went to the bullpen as Matz’s struggles were becoming too prominent. Gary Sanchez continued to rake as he hit a two-run single scoring Sevy and Gardner to make it a whopping 7-0 lead. The inning would finally end, after a Gregorius double play.

Luis Severino stifled the Mets all night with electric stuff and solid command of the zone. He had an ample amount of run support in case he did not have his stuff, but this was not the case until the seventh inning. He let up an unearned run, after Aaron Judge dropped a ball in the outfield, and the Mets pieced together a few base hits. Chasen Shreve would come on to retire the next two of the next three batters via the strikeout to keep the Mets at only one run.

Shreve got a chance to bat in the top half of the eighth, because Girardi wanted to pitch him for multiple outs in order to keep the bullpen rested. He unfortunately struck out.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Yankees put Bryan Mitchell in the game to get the last three outs with a six-run lead. He profusely struggled and surrendered a grand slam to Curtis Granderson making the game a save situation. Dellin Betances was called upon by Joe Girardi to shut the door and he did so successfully to pick up his eighth save of the season.

The Yankees will look to take this momentum into Boston as they face the Red Sox in a crucial three game series starting on Friday. Jordan Montgomery will pitch game one against Red Sox southpaw Drew Pomeranz. First pitch is at 7:10 PM EST in Fenway. The Yankees will begin the series four games back in the division.
