Yankees carry no-hitter into the 8th, win in walk-off fashion on Gleyber's 9th inning HR

The Yankees have just finished a grueling stretch of 18 straight games without an off day; with each team they faced having a record above .500. The Bombers finished 16-2. This game started as a pitcher’s duel between Domingo Germán and Mike Clevinger. No runs were scored until the 8th, when the Indians broke up the no hitter and put up four runs and the Yanks answered with three in their half. The Yankees tied it up in the bottom of the 9th thanks to a Neil Walker double and then won it on a Gleyber Torres three-run homer to dead center for the walk-off.

Germán made his Yankees starting debut today and he was exceptional. He was filling in for starter Jordan Montgomery, who is out for about two months with a flexor strain. The Yankees got what they expected and more, six no-hit innings with nine strikeouts. He was taken out after 84 pitches and got a nice hand from the crowd after striking out Jason Kipnis to end the inning.  

 Clevinger was just as good as Germán, striking out 10 over seven and a third, giving up just two earned runs. In the early going, there were not many scoring opportunities for either side. The Yankees threatened briefly in the bottom of the 5th thanks to an Aaron Hicks single and Neil Walker walk before Andújar grounded into a double play and Tyler Austin struck out right after.

Dellin Betances came in to relieve Germán in the 7th inning and had a solid inning with back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout, no-hitter still intact. Yankees continued to struggle against Clevinger and contributed their own quick inning. Manager Aaron Boone elected to send Betances out for the 8th and he gave up three of the Indian’s four runs. He gave up a leadoff single and an RBI single before Boone went to Jonathan Holder, who gave up a double to Francisco Lindor to plate another run. The next two runs came courtesy of a Gary Sánchez passed ball and a Kipnis sac-fly. 

The Yankees then began putting up better at bats and finally got Clevinger out of the game. Indian’s manager Terry Francona elected to ask his closer, Cody Allen, to get the five out save. Brett Gardner singled to center with two outs to plate Walker and then Aaron Judge doubled to deep right to score Tyler Austin and the hustling Gardner from first. Sánchez then hit a deep fly-ball to left-center, but it was caught to end the inning. 

Down one run in the bottom of the 9th, the Yankees never gave up. Hick hit a leadoff double over the center fielder’s head and Walker came through with a double to right to score Hicks and tie the game up. Stanton came up as a pinch hitter and was intentionally walked to bring up the 21-year-old Torres. He worked a full count and absolutely obliterated a pitch to center field into the bullpen. The Yankees win 7-4 thanks to the youngest player to hit a walk-off homer in Yankees franchise history. 

The Good 
-Domingo Germán looked really good filling in for Jordan Montgomery, looking like he earned himself the starting position for now. He mixed his pitches very well and never gave the Indians a chance to score.  
-Gleyber Torres looks really good, both offensively and defensively. The glove looks really good, making very difficult plays look easy and he continues to provide the Yankees with quality at-bats. 
 The Bad 
-The offense looked quiet for most of the day, not recording a hit until the 5th inning and not scoring until the 8th. Didi Gergorius and Sánchez went 0-7 with three strikeouts for Sánchez. 
-Miguel Andújar and Tyler Austin also went hitless.

What’s Next? 
The Yankees have a long-awaited off-day tomorrow after playing 18 games in 18 days. They will continue their homestand with a three-game series against the Red Sox and a three-game series against the Athletics. The Yankees will look to take the division lead from the Red Sox starting Tuesday night. The Yankees are throwing Luis Severino while the Red Sox will have Drew Pomeranz on the mound. The game starts at 7:05 PM ET on the YES Network.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
