Gleyber Torres powers his way to Player of the Week award

Gleyber Torres, the Yankees 21-year-old phenom, has been named the American League Player of the Week for the week of May 21-27. It is the first award won by the young second baseman, who has been in the big leagues for just five weeks.

During the six-game span, Torres posted a slash line of .368/.429/1.158 to go along with five homers, five runs scored, and nine RBIs. On Friday night, he hit a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning which would prove to be the difference in the game. It was his fifth round-tripper in four games, and it carried historical significance. The blast made Gleyber the youngest player in American League history to homer in four consecutive games. He is also the fourth youngest player since 1900 to accomplish the feat, older than only Miguel Cabrera, Andruw Jones, and Albert Pujols.

This is the second time this season a Yankee has won Player of the Week honors. The first player to win the award was Didi Gregorius during the week of April 30.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
