Jordan Montgomery injury: What it means for the Yankees moving forward

The Yankees suffered a big blow to their starting rotation on Tuesday night, as 25-year-old left-hander Jordan Montgomery left after only one inning into his start against the Astros. Originally, his injury was categorized as left elbow tightness, but earlier today the club confirmed a left elbow strain and placed Montgomery on the 10-day disabled list. He had pitched very well before his exit, posting a 3.62 ERA in 27.1 innings, as well as cruising through that first inning against the reigning champs, needing only seven pitches. Manager Aaron Boone said that Montgomery would likely miss 6-8 weeks, including a period of two to three weeks in which he won’t throw at all.

Montgomery’s next start was scheduled for this Sunday, May 6th, in the Bronx against Cleveland, and Boone has confirmed that Domingo German will indeed make the first start of his MLB career that day. German was brilliant in relief of Montgomery on Tuesday against the Astros, pitching four shutout innings and striking out four. He also worked out of a jam in the fourth inning, as a leadoff walk to Carlos Correa and a single from Yuli Gurriel was nullified after German first forced Alex Bregman to pop out to Judge, and then turned Marwin Gonzalez’s comebacker into an inning-ending double play. German’s efforts went a long way towards a New York win, as Justin Verlander also threw four shutout innings, then followed with another four before exiting after the eighth. The 25-year-old Dominican righty has been very effective out of the bullpen so far this year, with a 3.77 ERA and 18 strikeouts compared to just seven walks in his 14.1 innings this year. He also become the first Yankees reliever ever to strike out three or more in seven consecutive appearances. 

His opposition, the Cleveland Indians, come into today with a 16-13 record, and are batting only .236 as a team, 13th in the American League. Some have said German has a future in baseball as a starting pitcher, and we will get to see his first opportunity as a starter on Sunday.
