Matt Harvey is the Dark Knight the Bronx DOES NOT need
When Matt Harvey made his
debut for the Mets in 2012 fans around the game were in awe. His strong
powerful frame and blazing fastball made the young right hander seem untouchable
at times. Harvey, a Connecticut native, grew up a Yankees fan so it didn’t take long for fans of the team in the Bronx to covet the Queens’
new star. The goal was to wait until Harvey was a free agent and steal him away
for the Metropolitans in another move to cement the Yankees dominance over
their crosstown foes.
Harvey was an all-star in 2013 and dubbed the “Dark Knight” as he would be the savior the Mets desperately needed. He along with Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom would take people back to the glory of the ‘69 and ’86 Mets, and would be “amazin” again. Bad news struck in 2014 when Harvey underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the entire season but came back strong in 2015 winning comeback player of the year and helping the Mets make it to their first World Series since 2000 (we all know how that ended).
Ever since 2015 Harvey has
been a shell of himself. Since 2016 his record stands at 9-19 and ERA has
ballooned. He is no longer the Dark Knight. If anything, he’s Batman’s cousin who eats paint chips and does Pilates in the forest.
Harvey and the Mets have had a strained relationship for the past few seasons, and
finally on Friday afternoon, the Mets parted ways with their one time
savior. Harvey was designated for assignment after refusing to go down to the
minors.
The Yankees could now get
Harvey for cheap and acquire the man who grew up loving them, but this is not
the Matt Harvey the fans pined over when he first came up. The dominant flame
thrower is long gone and what’s left is an out of shape
pitcher with a bad arm and poor attitude. Jordan Montgomery’s injury would make the Yankees a plausible landing spot but
Luis Cessa, Domingo German or AJ Cole are far better options than Harvey who
would probably not mesh well in the team first Yankee clubhouse.
The Yankees have long been
drawn to star players with big names but all Matt Harvey is anymore is
just a name, he’s no longer a star and not what this team needs. When
it comes to the Dark Knight Brian Cashman ought to say no, unless it involves
Christian Bale throwing out the first pitch one night.
