Yanks bats go quiet as they drop series finale to Rays 3-1

On a warm, sunny Father’s Day in the Bronx, the Yankees bats were nonexistent as they lost the finale of a four-game series to the Rays, 3-1. Despite the loss, the Yankees still managed the take three out of four in the weekend series and are currently a half-game ahead of the Red Sox.

This was a rather uneventful game besides the top of the second inning. Tampa opened the inning with two seeing-eye singles off CC Sabathia before Carlos Gomez smashed an RBI double down the left field line to give the Rays a 1-0 lead. After inducing a pop out and picking up a strikeout, Sabathia looked like he’d be able to escape the inning with minimal damage. However, Matt Duffy served an 0-2 cutter into right field which scored two more and gave the Rays all the offense they’d need in this one. Aside from that inning, credit Sabathia who was able to bear down and hold Tampa to three, while also lasting 7.2 innings (his longest outing of the season). It really felt like a vintage CC Sabathia outing from the early 2010s.

Offensively, this was an ugly one for the Bombers. The Yankees lone run came in the fifth inning when Aaron Hicks hit his eighth home run of the season to right-center off Rays “opener” Wilmer Font. New York was threatening to add on later in the inning after two-out walks to Aaron Judge and Didi Gregorius put runners on first and second for Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton did not come through for the Yankees, however, as he struck out to end the frame. For the day, the Yankees were 0-7 with runner in scoring position. It was a rough game for the Yankees, but those are bound to happen and the important thing is that they took the series.
What’s Next?

The Yankees head down to our Nation’s capital tomorrow to complete the suspended game against the Nationals from May 15th, which is currently tied 3-3 in the sixth inning. That game is set to be resumed at 5:05pm on YES. After the conclusion of that one, the Yankees will play a full game against Washington with Sonny Gray (4-4, 4.89 ERA) taking on Eric Fedde (0-1, 5.91 ERA) in a rematch of last week’s matchup between the two at Yankee Stadium. Five keys to a successful 2016

Being trapped inside for the last two days due to the snowstorm that pounded the entire eastern seaboard has only enhanced my desire for the return of baseball season. Considering all indications from ownership point to the Yankees being done for the most part as far as additions are concerned, I felt as if now would be a prompt time to make some early predictions about the 2016 season. As I look at the Yankees team as currently comprised, I'm feeling the same sense of uncertainty as I did at this point last season. A successful 2016 season is contingent on production from players who are either old, injury prone, or in some cases, a combination of both. Normally, this would seem to be a recipe for disaster, however I'm going to try the optimistic route. Below, are what I view as the five keys to a successful 2016.
