What else is new? Sevy dominant in Yankees 6-0 win.

The Yankees offense erupted for six early runs, and ended up winning 6-0 in the second game of their series against the Phillies. Both teams started their aces, with Luis Severino, and Jake Arrieta taking the hill for the Yankees and Phillies respectively.

After winning for the first time in four games it was important that the Yankees keep the pressure on the very young Phillies by scoring first, and they certainly did that. In the first at-bat of the game, Aaron Hicks took a sinker that didn’t sink and placed it over the center field wall. It was his 11th blast of the year, and his sixth of June. The Yankees never looked back.

In the third inning after a Luis Severino flyout, the Yankees put together a rally. Aaron Hicks singled, and was followed by a Judge liner into left. Then, Didi Gregorius hit a grounder to Phillies second baseman, Cesar Hernandez, for what should have been an inning ending double play, but Hernandez’s flip to the shortstop, Scott Kingery, was wild, and the Phillies weren’t able to get any outs. After Giancarlo Stanton struck out with the bases loaded, Gleyber Torres made sure he wouldn’t let the Phillies off the hook by lining a two out base hit to left field, which scored two. Then, Greg Bird snapped an 0-15 streak with an RBI single to left. After three, the Yankees led 4-0.  

The Yankees offense didn’t let up the rest of the game. In the fourth, Austin Romine laced a leadoff double to left, and after a wild pitch advanced him to third, Aaron Hicks had his third productive at-bat of the game by flying out plenty deep enough to score him. In the fifth Didi crushed another home run to right to make the score 6-0. 

Yankees pitching was absolutely fantastic tonight. Luis Severino pitched an amazing game, which is almost expected out of him now. He pitched seven shutout innings, had nine strikeouts, and allowed six hits. The only time Severino was in trouble was the seventh innings, when with two outs he allowed back to back singles to Scott Kingery, and Andrew Knapp, but worked out of it by striking out Aaron Altherr. Severino picked up his 12th win of the year, and lowered his ERA to 2.10. Adam Warren came on, and pitched a scoreless eighth, which was assisted by an amazing jumping catch by Aaron Hicks, and in the ninth Chasen Shreve proved to the world that anything is possible by pitching a scoreless inning.  

What’s Next? 

Tomorrow the Yankees will look to get the series sweep at 7:05 on YES. Luis Cessa (0-0, 3.00 ERA) will take the hill for the Yankees while Zach Eflin (5-2 3.44 ERA) will be on the mound for the Phillies.
